Portrait Of Tracy question..

By watching videos I know that in the beginning there is a 2&6 fret stretch or something...but I'm not sure what you really do for that...I looked at some tabs and it read: 2(6)T on the A string...I don't know if you fret a note, harmonic which fret...can someone help me out?...I just started working on this piece.

it's an artificial harmonic. fret the 2nd fret on the A string
and gently place your fret hand pinky on the 6th fret of the A string and pluck the A string with your plucking hand. if you're fingers aren't long this may be difficult, i myself can barely do it. but it's defintely a lot easier than the last harmonic chord of that song tha'ts for sure.

There are other, easier ways of making a D# harmonic.

You could fret the 2nd fret and play the harmonic above the 29th (I think) fret. The harmonic on my bass is above the neck pup.
i.e. fret 2nd fret with left hand and rest the thumb of the right hand around the 29th fret and play with your 1st or 2nd finger on your right hand.

You cant cheat on that one. You have a beat an a half to make the stretch. Its not an easy one at all, but thats why the songs hard. Theres not a cheat for everything.

I dont think you have to do the on on the A string. its easier and it sounds the same if you just do it on the D and the G

Yeah, I know. Bummer. But, hey, after 20+ years of playing this piece (and bass in general) I can make the stretch...almost.

I have sad, tiny little hands too and I found the stretch was easy if you make sure to angle your neck and keep the bass up kinda high. Also, I found that the other way of playing the note just didn't seem to sound quite as full, but that may just be my bass, I don't know.

Victor Wooten plays the 2-6 fret stretch as a pinch harmonic.

I've always used the thumb cheat instead of the 2-6 stretch, ever since I first learned the song. For me, the trick to the 9-13 at the end is right hand attack, because that harmonic can be tricky to get sometimes.
