The ultimate Egyptian scale is double harmonic.

1 b2 M3 P4 P5 m6 M7 8

And major phrygian is cool too. Just play the M7 as a m7.

if i can get my bass to sound like a pyramid then i'd be placed in some sort of ecstacy land, or a tomb with much gold and other assorted jewels around me awaiting a mass robbing that'd be cool

Absolutely! I plan to borrow from that list myself. The guy I write with tends to write a lot of middle-eastern/eqyptian sounding pieces - especially because he composes them on his bazouki that is tuned with an open "D" tuning. I love droning the "D" and working the scales on the "G" string with a very 'sitar-ish' approach - it is easy and automatically transports you to exotic 'eastern' destinations.

In the pic I am using as my avatar I am doing exactly that. That pic was shot at a gig where we were doing a lot of that sort of music.

That's a site I've been reading now and then that has a lot of starter imformation about the scales in arabic music. I'd imagine a fretless bass with light gauge strings would probably sound pretty arabic if you played some of this music with it.

I'd do it myself if this maqam stuff wasn't so complicated, what with all the "approximate quarter tone" stuff... ^_^*

Yeh, im getting fretless lowb-er, imean, sure some lighter sound is good for bass but, i prefer being more bassy than going high c and being more guitar=) and fretless seem more interesting anyway IMO^^ Ok, light gauge u say, what type? Im not experienced w strings

I suggested the light gauge just to maximize the fingerboard buzz (and maybe thus a more sitar like sound.) I know michael manring uses D'addario EXL lights/super lights on his basses, and I've heard numerous tracks where he gets a tone that would probably work really well with this arabic style.

However, he definately goes more towards the "guitar like" end of the tone spectrum. This might run counter to the low-B route you're going.

I think any roundwound set of strings played on a fretless in some of these strange scales would probably sound pretty middle eastern. But then you might run into the problem of fingerboard wear... You could go with flatwounds to counteract this, but that would definately take some of the bite out of the "sitar-ness" of the sound. choices... choices...

Yeh, im going the low b way=), but im thinking the wah sound would fit perfectly for egyptishmetal, i mean, i dont want it to do that really light oud thingie, i mean, thats for a guitar obviously, but i think even with a low sound one can have an egypt feel with the right sound, like Waahh

Yeah, roundwounds will wear out your fingerboard, so use flatwounds. they will give you the wah at the correct action and setup and they have a warmer tone.

In addition to listening to Jonas Helborg, I'd certainly say that you should sheck out Jah Wobble, and most of all, Mick Karn.

Mixolydian of harmonic minor (harmonic minor scale, but start on the fifth).

Doesn't get any more middle eastern than that.
