Smile Post Rock Bass- How to and tips

I listen to quite a bit of Instrumental Rock or "Post Rock" ex. Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, This Will Destroy You, God is an Astronaut, Slint, etc. And have dreamt many a dream about forming such a group myself. What techniques do you find personally useful in this genre or some that you have seen successfully employed by others. And how the basses placement varies in certain situations (I'm currently working within a three piece band guitar, drums, bass at the moment) Thanks folks.

I've played this genre almost exclusively for about five years now. There are a lot of different ways to approach the genre, and for a three-piece I really recommend leaning towards filling the space more than simply establishing the rhythm. This means having a solid understanding of how to chords in the higher registers, and to tastefully use effects that make your sound bigger (delay and reverb, for example). Being that post-rock eschews verse-chorus song structure for alrger and more fluid movements, you want to always keep the movement of the overall piece in mind when writing, as opposed to worrying about each individual section by itself.

Hope that helps.
