Practicing with a metronome: I finally get it

Sign in to disble this ad
I just watched video of myself playing a solo guitar+singing gig (I'm also a part-time guitard, so sue me), and I must say, I finally "get" why practicing with a metronome is so important.

In the heat of the gig with no rhythm section to lay down the beat, I was just off my stride and hurrying through the song. I thought my natural sense of rhythm would prevail (hence the non-metronome usage), but I am a humbled musician and am going to do penance in my practice sessions from now on.

More power to you, bro! There's nothing better for self-critique than videtaping your own performances. It's a humbling experience for me every time!

+1

I didn't play with a 'nome for years, now I use it probably 75% of the time while I'm practising. It's a valuable tool.

Last week I played with a guitarist who was tapping his toes way off the beat. We recorded everything, it's hard to argue with a recording. Another valuable tool.
