So I'm guessing the correct fingering would be
2 2 2 2 4 2 2 2 2 2 2 1 2 1
However when I play it I find I have real difficulty making the jump from R to 5 sound clean, so I end up playing
1 1 1 1 4 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 1 2 1 |
Looks like there's an extra "beat" in the 2nd example-
I assume the above in Bold/Underscore is the "R" (Root)? Are you switching fingers?
Is there a Rest in there to allows the time to do so?
Have you tried-
l
1-1-1-1-4-
1-1-1-1-1-1-1-
2-1l
(Bold = Root)

Does the fingering really matter if the sounds ok?

I guess...McCartney, on those old Ed Sullivan videos, has some painful-looking technique (Fretting Hand issues).
Somewhere on the
Anthology I disc (IIRC, "One After 909") he is whimpering about not having his plectrum...(Plucking Hand issues).
He made do very well, however. The recordings always sounded great.
That said, from my experience, you may need finger-per-fret for more difficult things...may also help for reading.
Takes time, though, to feel comfortable enough to use in lower positions.
As always, YMMV.
