Problem with my slap/pop technique

Sign in to disble this ad
Apparently when I move to pop a bass string, I often end up muting the strings I'm not playing without meaning to using the pinky-side of my right hand. Sometimes I guess I end up accidentally anchoring my hand to the strings bad enough that I end up pushing them down to the pole pieces of the pickups, and I'm starting to get sick of that occasional snap from my amp.

Any of you folk happen to have any tips on how to correct this?

It sounds like you're pushing down on the strings with the right side of your hand while pulling up(out and away from you) when you pluck with your index.

If I'm correct then all you need to do is quit plucking like that! lol

Instead of rotating your wrist so much when you pluck.. try keeping your wrist stiff and using your arm to execute the pluck. Also keep your hand off the strings.. only your fingers should be touching the strings when you pluck. (Generally speaking)

hope that helps.

Hmmm.. I didn't think it'd be as simple as a "well stop doing that" kind of answer.

Crap. I think pulling my hand out from the bass instead of rotating my arm is going to feel unnatural.

You might try to lightly anchor your pinky tip on the area below your strings and use it to keep you from pushing into the strings too hard
