problem with slap

Sign in to disble this ad
I've tried, I've tried and I've tried but I simply can't! i've visited various tutorials about how, i know how to pluck (finger technique) and pick and thumb but i can't slap. I've noticed something on my bass that the strings are far from the neck well i know that they need a separation but i think mine's exaggerated. Am I right? are they separated or is it just me with my nervous?

P.D.: Sorry for my bad English:c
P.D.D.: I have a Dean ZOXMB II or sumthing like that

cheers mates( :

From what I remember, when you start learning to slap, don't listen to yourself. Just know what the note you tried to hit and the sound it's supposed to make is. Yes, sloppy is OK as long as you know what it is really supposed to be. Ignore the slop and just play right throught it. Eventually, your timing and coordination will come together.

I think if you focus too much on the sound your slapping comes up with at the beginning, you will become frustrated. Just beat them strings up until they comply! With practice, your timing will get better and your note will become clearer. Playing without plugging into an amp is probably the best way to learn to slap IMHO.

If the strings are very high from the neck and you have a 20-21 fret instrument it will be even harder to get the slap / pop sound.

If you get a good setup where the strings are more even with the fingerboard/frets you will get the slap tone with less effort.

Start with getting the bass setup properly, there are some good tutorials on here.

A good setup is very important, I agree with that.

It can take some time to get the technique right, but if you want to learn it, why not take some lessons?

All my students have learned the basic technique within two weeks. An hour with a decent teacher can really improve your playing.

thanks all of you! but i've seen videos and i try to cpy them and the sound isnt the same, when i pop(?) the string hits the fret separators(?) the metal things that separate the fret and it sounds pretty bad, is that normal or i am hearing the bass instead of the amplifier?

You can fix the problem with you string just go to your local music shop or luthier and have them set you up. Slapping just takes time, i haven't even mastered it yet so don feel bad! Just keep on jamming!!

The metal things on your neck are the frets. And yes, the string slapping back on the frets is what gives you the slap tone!
