A program to jam to?

Something with some stock beats that you can adjust the tempo to... or anything really. I'm just looking to. I know GC has a pedal that does this but i cannot afford it, so programs be my only option.

Band in a box. I use it and GarageBand loops. I had a dr880 by boss but for 600$ I took it back cause it didn't do chords.

i am also looking into this.. does the band in a box do chords? if so, what kind of chords? can we throw 9th's, 11th's, etc?

regards

PS: i am assuming this software at least does the drums right?

Yes, Band in a Box does chords with nearly any type of extension- sometimes you have to deal with the voicing they choose (according to the style you've selected), but I'm sure there is a way to tweak them. Sometimes I use BIAB when I'm trying to memorize a tune.

I use BIAB to work on improv skills, especially working through jazz changes... I can almost play Bebop now

On a slightly different tangent I sometimes put iTunes in shuffle mode and try to jam along to whatever comes up.

Ever since I joined the iPod generation I've been constantly astounded by the amount of music I own that either didn't realise I had or have never heard of!

It really helps picking out intervals and is quite fun and challenging jumping from smooth jazzy funk to viking metal.

+1 on BIAB. You can also do instant transposition of the chords on the fly.

"Learn how to build tracks" is basically entering the chords. I don't think it will be a problem.

OTOH, there are a few "fake book" folders that come with the program, and you can dig through those to find a lot of songs (from jazz standards to Christina Aguilera)

just play along with records and aebersold jazz backing tracks are cheap with good instructional materials. also the asd ( amazing slow downer) on my iphone costs $15 and you can vary the speed ofsongs and change pitch. These three keep me busy. And for timing , nothing 'beats' a metronome set on say just the first beat of a measure or the second and 4th beats.
