Proper popping. Is there a standard?

I've been playing for about 15 years, and never got into slapping. Now it has grabbed me and sucked me in. 90% of my practise now is slapping. It seems that there is no 'proper' technique. I feel comfortable doing it the way I am, but just wanted to know if there were anydownfalls for when it's time to move on to more advanced techniques. Basically, I don't want to unlearn bad habits. It is very natural for me to use my middle finger to pop, and from doing a search, it seems that most people use their index finger. Without getting into double pops and such, is there any negatives that you guys could think of that will not let me advance with this technique? In other words, for basic popping, is there anything wrong with using my middle finger instead of my index? I would still like to get my index stronger, but for the majority of playing, I would prefer the middle.

I learned that way, and eventually found that by raising my strap and keeping my hand in a more fist-like position, it was easier and more efficient to use the index.

yeah you can pop with whatever fingers you want. i generally use index for d string and middle for the G string, or if 1 of those finger gets tired i'll use the other, being able to use both fingers tho probably gonna make it easier to double pop

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been working on my index popping today, and I think I just need to do it alot. I'm guessing that in a few weeks, it will feel just as comfortable.
