Question about using a bow

I was simply wondering if you had to have flat-wound strings to get a good sound from a bow on an electric bass.

Thanks to anyone who helps. I am grateful.

Well, first of all, you'd have to have flatwounds because roundwounds would tear the crap out of the hair on a bow.

More importantly, electric basses don't have the radius to the strings to effectively bow all 4 strings.

The rosin will mess up your strings and bass.

I was looking for a wierd, kind of eery effect to use in an intro for a song my band is writing.

Thank you for your help...

Do you happen to have any suggestions that would help me get the kind of effect I am looking for?

You could try a volume swell - turn your volume knob all the way down, then hit the note and gradually bring it up.

Try this with a bit of reverb and you might be able to get a poor man's bow sound.

It's a handheld device that creates a varying magnetic field using a 9V battery. Hold it over your strings and you can get volume swells and infinite sustain effects.
