I am retire Navy, so if you want to take this to PM let me know, since otherd may not be interested in what I am about to ask, but...
How is your band organized from a military standard? Are you guys Officer, Enlisted, or a mix? When you say that you lead the band, are you the OIC, or the senior NCO, or some other variation?
I have seen the Navy version of your band several times, but never got to ask them the questions. They performed in civies when I saw them, so I couldn't tell.
Just curious

I'm the NCOIC of our rock band (the popular music ensemble). Since we're autonomous, I answer to the Chief (E9), and our Commander (an O3).
The band (larger group) is organized like all other American military bands - A Commander (commissioned officer), sometimes a Vice Commander (or XO), Enlisted Bandleader (E9), any number of other SNCOs who act as group leaders (or ensemble leaders), shop heads, etc.
My job is to decide on music, rehearse the band, and take responsibility for my group's schedule. I can decide where to tour (within our touring area, keeping the mission in mind). I can deploy my group as I see fit (meaning, I can let people off gigs, etc to fit the right group of musicians to the mission). My people come to me if/when they want a day off, and I have the authority to give it to them. Conversely, I can make life miserable if we're not getting it done.
Does that answer your question?

If you recall I have posted about joining the navy band almost two years ago and here I am at my final duty station based out of NAS Coronado. I have dabbled with the idea of cross rating to MU but keep on hitting dead ends going through my chain of command and I can only get so far as an E4. After quite a bit of research I'v come up with the paperwork I need to crossrate and my requirements as a bassist but i need to wait till 20OCT08 since the Navy has policies I must abide. I have not set a scheduled audition but am preparing myself for whatever comes my way with what I know.
I was wondering if you could lead me to the right direction as far as auditioning and preparing for the audition to get into the School of Music. I have had quite a bit of trouble and direction with non military bassist as far as training goes. I'd like input fom someone that is actually "in" and can aid/point me in the right direction or advice and what to study specifically.

If I got your location right, it's the Navy Band Southwest. Call them at DSN 735-6498 and talk to someone there who knows. They'll guide you along. Good luck!
