QUestion for the pick players out there...

What are you using for a pick (brand/model/type/etc)?

I've always played finger style for bass, but my band has taken on some songs that require pick use, so I'm looking for input on what other people are using. I have messed with playing with a pick before on bass (and play guitar with one as well)... I tend to gravitate toward medium weight picks for guitar, but feel I need something heavier for bass.

Thanks!

you do. a heavier pick does the work for you and takes a LOT of stress off your hand. i'm using gator grip 2mm but anything as heavy as a fender heavy will work.

i normally use a .7-1mm

giant picks never get it for me. too much thud. i choke down a lot, so they dont get too floppy.

if you're worried about breaking one, switch to dunlop ultex. indestructible.

Cool

Graphite 1.5mm. Has a nicer sounding attack than plastic, IMO

for a good attack, I use either the graphite 1.5mm or Dunlop 1mm, but for fingerstyle sound, I use either felt or leather picks.

Dunlop Tortex .88

I also hold the pick "straight finger" and mute at the bridge with the edge of my hand most of the time. I can use guitar grip on the pick, too (Mel Bay style), but it uses too much elbow for my taste.

They are epic.

Classic Fender Heavy (white). Gets a good edge for the punkier sounds, and really doesn't give on the fast stuff. Doesn't sound plastic at all. Available anywhere, and pretty inexpensive. Great for guitar, too.

The blue tortex, although I almost never pick nowadays. Still, it does give a powerful grind.

Dunlop .88 or 1mm Nylon. They last forever, but difficult to see if dropped on a dark stage... So take a handful if you drop 'em. I am lucky enough to still have 'em all... If I'd only have taken 1, it'd be gone I'm sure - Murphy's Law ya know!

+1 for Tortex. I love their 2.0mm Gator blacks for when I occasional play some metal pick-style.

I like the Tortex 60mm (Red). My thumb starts to cramp if I use anything heavier.

Agreed, I really like the Big Stubbies, especially the 2.0mm.

I also like a felt pick, but only when it's new. I don't know if this is common to all felt picks, but the Dunlops I've tried get compacted pretty quickly and you lose the softer attack, leaving you with something close to the sound of a harder pick (like plastic). But while they're new, they're pretty nice, especially with flats.
