A question of propriety regard finger style for you well trained ones.

I am playing bass in a cheesy cover band. I enjoy it immensely and despite being cheesy, I do take a great deal of pride in playing well and providing bottom and movement. The question is... I use 3 fingers of my right hand. Almost instinctively I start with the ring finger out to index. Is this backwards? I make it work with little confusion. But is it correct?

If it is comfortable and sounds good, then it is the right way.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way. It varies from person to person.

I do it ring, middle, index as well. If I do it, it must be right

Depending on where a certain line is going it can sometimes be better to start with a certain finger to end up on the right one for the next move so to speak. (Did that make sense?). So, it can help to be able to start on either finger. But there is no right or wrong, if it feels right and you can play your basslines fluently the way you do it, then it's right.
