Question regarding a bass drop

What exactly is a bass drop? I know the sound of it, but what exactly is it? And how is it done both live and in the studio?

Oh, man - I've dropped basses both live and in the studio - the coolest sound I got was the night I had my Steinberger turned up and plugged into a Showco Rat distortion box also turned up), and dropped it from overhead to the floor.

Most of the rest of them, I accidently dropped, and they weren't plugged in - the noise they made wasn't that cool, and left dings on the instruments.

hm, since you can't seem to get some serious answers, i'll give this a try:

there are probably a lot of things that are called bass drop, but the one comes to my mind now is a technique that's used a lot when mixing metal records.

it's a very deep "boom" sound that's used for a dramatic effect. as far as i know it's done by triggering a sub-bass sample (or similar) at certain point in the song, often using the kick drum as a trigger.

i hope that helped - it's not quite clear what kind of effect you're actually talking about.

I think you answered your own question. Unless you mean a very fast slide down on your lowest string.

Perhaps he's talking about the thingamajigs that lower the tuning of a string with the flip of a leeever.

Sorry, I got carried away... Can you either describe what you mean a little better, of tell us where we can listen to some examples? A record, a Youtube video, something like that?
