Quick Double Thumbing question

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking into different funk techniques and one that is giving me some trouble is the double thumb. I've seen some videos on it but I still don't know i the action is a downward slap with a reverse pluck or a double slap or what. From some of what i've read, it doesn't seem to involve a slap at all but more of just a thumb pick.

If anyone could give me a few pointers I would appreciate it.

I found that once I got some sound out of my double-thumb just focusing on using the thumb like a pick, it helped to start thinking of the motion as a push and a scoop. The opposite motion of revving a motorcycle. Also helpful was using not the tip of the thumb, and not the side, but sort of the corner about where the nail-bed comes off of my thumb.

you should be using the joint of your thumb for the part that hits the string on both the down and the up, once you get extremely comfortable with that you can start using the top half of your thumb to help with incorporating plucks

i'm also just starting to add some double thumbing into my slap tech, as it isnt really much like slap at all, i dont wheather i should just add some thumbing up and down larry graham style to make some fast lap parts easier or just have double thumb replace my slap tech, i doubt i will tho

Check out Ray Riendeau's "Ask a Pro" forum here on TB. I asked him about double thumbing and he gave some great suggestions.

Point your thumb towards your shoulder, not towards your headstock. As I've said a couple times before on this forum, it's like you're giving the audience (or hypothetical audience) a thumb's up.

I'd give exactly the opposite advice. The thumb is pointed much more toward the headstock than upward.
