What worked for me. Learn the Cycle of Fifths, then all the modes. Say the root note of every scale as you play it. That'll start you.

Or just print out a fretboard diagrahm, and look at the notes that your playing on whatever songs your doing.

Try to learn your harmonics too. IE - E is the lowest open string, 12th fret on E is....E again, 7th fret on your A string is....E again. Learn the spacings, now apply it to the 1st fret on the E string. 1st fret on E is F, 13th fret on E is F, and 8th fret on A is F, yada yada yada.

Remember that theres no B#, or that B# is C, and the same with E to F.

So its A- A#- B- C- C#- D- D#- E- F- F#- G- G#

So your E string is - E- F- F#- G- G#- A- A#- B- C- C#- D- D#- E (at the 12th fret)

there ya go, theres two string right there!

If none of that works. Write them all down a few times. Ya only gotta go to the 12th fret, because it all repeats after that.

Good Luck!

write random chord symbols (major and minor) or have someone else do it... then when you have a whole page play 4 beats of each triad (1-3-5-3) in a steady pace. do this in all possible shapes and all possible positions...

also just saying the notes as you play them can help as can learning standard notation as it forces you past this barrier
