Quick Question about plucking fingers

Sign in to disble this ad
I never really realized this until recently, but when I play something that changes strings, I tend to hit the next note that is on the next string up with the same finger twice. However, this only happens going up the strings (G string - E string), not E string - G string

Example: C maj scale (going back down), starting from 3rd fret (I=index finger, M=Middle)

C B A G F E D C
I M I I M I I M

My main question is if this is bad technique or not. I just usually tend to play however feels natural to me, only recently have I been re-assessing my form.

It is not bad technique and someone will come and say it is. Search the technique forum under "raking" for some heated discussions.

I used to have the habit of raking myself. I still use it a lot however on some some passages it slows me down or leaves the higher string ringing, making for a less clean sound than I want.

I have since started doing different finger exercises to eliminate the habit of raking so that I can choose when to rake and when not to rake, but I don't see it as poor technique either.

im in the same boat at the moment, no its not poor technique at all.

im learning to use alternation as in always going IMIMIMIMIM even when changing strings, but no doubt at some point ill learn raking.

my bass tutor just wants me to learn this way first

I had the same problem. I sat down and played super slow noticing my hand and correcting it when I did it. I found over time, that it's gone with only a couple slip ups here and there. I found I actually did it less when I didn't even think about my right hand.
