in reggae would you play a bass line and put the guitar to that or play a guitar line and then make a bass line for that?

Thanks

if you're talking about song writing (i'll assume you are) then i would just write what sounded right on whatever instrument... either way you have a chord progression to follow... maybe when writing one you should think of the other...

start with a bass line, then write another, then tell the guitarist to go home. get an organ player, tell him to play that funky upbeat stuff.

Captain Garcia raggae

I guess reggae is strongly centered on the spaces between the beats, I would say bass and drums/percussions but guitar and keys are equally important in the arrangement. listen to Captain Garcia's or Zappa reggae material.

There's 2 traditional roles of the guitar , the Chop which can be doubled by the keyboard player (not the Hammond player).

They also double the bass line, octave higher.
