Play along to some cd's of your favourite music. Listen closely to the bass lines. Listen to how the bassist keeps the groove and locks in with the drums. Pick songs with different rhythms and try to copy them.

I agree with fearceol, you just need to be exposed to lots and lots of basslines. Listen to your favorite songs and listen closely to the bass line and learn it, get to the point where you are comfortable playing the bass line and it becomes second nature to you. Keep learning new songs. Pick a song, learn it, understand it, pick another one... Try to start with simple bass lines and really understand whats going on, then gradually start learning more difficult songs. Then when you are playing with other musicians and making your own bass lines you will have more knowledge and you'll find that the rhythms and riffs just flow right out without even really trying. It also helps to just sit back and listen to the music and just feel what the bass should be doing, imagine the bass in your head and how it should sound. also, learn your fretboard well, know all the notes, keys, chords.. all that theory stuff. It will help expand your mind and you will be able to understand the music much better. Try to find a teacher and get lessons would help you improve as well.

The best way to learn anything about music is by listening.
Listen all the time.
Then listen with your bass in your hands.

take a bassline that you already know and change the rythim of it by putting pauses in different locations, change the length different notes. Try to make it sound like a different type of music ie country/rock/reggae/blues

find a begining drummer book to learn basic rythims.
