right hand finger alternation consistency

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I've been playing for about 7 years now. I started out on a four string with the 3 finger technique and now I play five strings with the floating thumb technique and only two fingers on my right hand (I think it grooves more this way!).
I noticed something I thought I had eliminated a looooooong time ago while practicing harmonic minor modes yesterday. I have a tendency to break the alternation and to rake, especially when moving from the G string to the D string. I am trying my best to figure out excercises to eliminate this tendency completely, and I have found a few, but would appreciate if any of you could share any good ways to avoid raking.

Thanks a bunch

Try starting with your middle finger if you usually start with your index finger, and vice versa.

The only thing I could think of is just doing permutations up and down strings until it becomes more natural, starting with your index first, then doing them again with middle first as middy said. However, is raking a bad thing? Some teachers frown against it but others condone it for going from G up to E.

Thanks for your replies.
I don't view raking as a bad thing. For me it's a matter of taste mostly. I find that when I rake my playing doesn't breathe, whereas a steady alternation gives me a more relaxed feeling. When I rake I feel almost like my hands are unable to breathe. But then again, it's a natural tendency, so go figure...

Just wanted to share this, because I figured it out. It's not exactly raking. I just have a tendency to start with my middle finger on every string. So if I finished on the previous string with my middle, and I start on the new string with my middle finger, it's raking.
I just have to use my index finger when starting.

Yay! Now I know what I must do to avoid this!

Thanks for the replies, you really really helped!

Starting with your middle finger? That's pretty unique. Most like to start with index. Glad you could analyze that problem. It should be easy trying to break the habit now.
