Just wanted to add one thing: mute whichever strings you're using to stop your rest strokes with your left hand. That should take care of the extraneous noise.
Unlike a classical guitar, it doesn't take much to produce a noise on a solidbody bass. Even perfectly clean right hand rest strokes will generate unwanted noise without the left hand's help.
