Right Hand Finger Style 'Endurance'

Sign in to disble this ad
I've only just started out playing with a band, and after a a couple of hours of practice this weekend, I found that my index and middle fingers were getting sore and tired, like a muscle pain kind of thing.

I was just wondering if there were any 'devices' such as grips and the like that could help 'train' my muscles to put up with the strain.

I know that continuing to play at that rate for that length of time will be the most helpful method, but I was wondering if there was a 'device' that I could use when I can't get to my bass.

Any ideas?

If your playing has increased due to this band then it is normal. Warm up and do some gentle stretches before and after gigs. This would have to be a long term thing before exercise is needed, but exercises can help, not devices as such.
Do not confuse pains. If it is a buring sensation or fatigue like you get from exercise or overdoing it then fine, if not, see and medical pro for proper diagnosis.
Check out the blogs in the link about exercises and playing

Thank you very much

I think it was just muscle fatigue, so nothing to worry about

Drink loads more water, have some pasta before you play, and keep a bannana or two handy. Great, easy foods for easing problems like yours when you hand/arm muscles are effectively working out and need energy.

i used to only play with a pick.

then i found myself commuting on public transport for 4 hours a day.
i would listen to death metal and "pluck" my fingers against the vinyl seats of the bus along with the fast metal beat.
the stiff vinyl seats gave enough resistance to my fingers that i went from playing only pick style to easily playing finger style in only a matter of weeks.

Stretch then warmup then stretch a little more before you play and stretch after playing. Also make sure your technique isn't causing undue strain. There was a really good video somewhere of someone about right hand technique but I don't recall the guys name.

Don't stretch cold,,,,,,old school thought

Warm up steady and gradually about 10 mins

Stretch after warming up if at all......

Stretch AFTER playing.
