just joined an old school death metal styled band and they do alot of speed picking. the problem is i use my fingers and dont like picks because ive got horrible timing and less control with them.

Checkout some youtube videos of billy sheehan. He uses 3 and 4 fingers for speed. There are a couple of interviews where he demonstrates it. I would post a link but I am on my DROID.

check Brian Beller master class at bass player magazine, the flicking technique is a way to go fast... I dig that right now

Bass Videos featuring Premiere Video Content from the Bass Community - BassPlayer.com

and browse for power strike technique also for a punchy attack...

good for rock and metal...

I would suggest the Dominique Di Piazza or Matt Garrison techniques for speed, but in the context of a death metal band with loud drums and even louder guitars, its going to be pretty difficult to cut through without a super loud bass amp at every gig. You can try the old school "2 fingers against a metronome" practice. Or, there is...one other option...use a pick

No matter what technique you try, the only way to build up speed is to start at a comfortable tempo and build it up gradually.

I think your chances of being fast and accurate for metal are using a pick. The method for fast picking is often described as turning a key in a lock. You are twisting your wrist, not going up/down.

I think many bassists in that style use a pick for that reason. Your guitarists will eventually write a lick that involves such fast alternate picking that you wont be able to keep up with fingers.

Have you guys seen Matt Garrison latest video lesson about his 4-finger technique?!

I helped producing it - it is part of a series that is coming up in his Youtube Channel and his website. Enjoy: Matthew Garrison 4 Finger Technique - Groove Applications - YouTube

hold your pointer and middle fingers together and move them as one. it's a technique i have never seen anyone use but you get some great attack! if your thumb is anchored on the pup and your fingers are parallel to your thumb you can get some really good speed, too. it's great for me because hitting the string with more mass/force lets you keep good time as well as gliding along the surface of the string as opposed to hearing the "doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo" of two fingers.

if this made no sense to you, i don't blame you. tornado sirens all night. in january.
