The question is, is this correct to do?
(If you're puzzled, just tighten your fist and bring up your index, thumb, and middle finger only). |
I wouldn't call it right or wrong as I used to do the same thing when I first started playing. Over time I had to keep slowing down so my hand would relax as it would cramp if I played to long. Now my pinky looks like it's broken and sticking out the side of my hand when I play, it really looks odd.
In one of the earlier posts the floating thumb technique is suggested. It is useful and helpful but not for everything. The biggest change I feel and see is point of leverage. Usually when I use (F)loating(T)humb I'm on the E and A strings only and it depends on what I'm doing, double picking, triples over doubles, stutter picking, etc, to do things like that my hand has to opened up to work right. With FT I rest the heel of my hand on the body, some players go as far as resting their forearm on the top edge of the body, it all really depends on how you play, what style, and what sound you are going for. Now for basic chugging, my thumb is on either the front pick up or the string above the one I am playing on.
