Right hand thumb muting

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys/girls I'm playing again after about 4years away so I want to start back right.

With regard to the right hand when using fingerstyle should the thumb "track" down the strings providing the mutes .

For example my thumb will track down from resting on the E to the A when playing the D/G strings .

Is this slowing me down? should all the muting be handled by the fretting hand.

Cheers

There is often some discussion going on about this ("floating thumb"). You are fine.

I do the floating thumb quite a bit unconsciously. I rally do most of my right hand stuff without thinking about it anymore. I change hand position all the time depending on the sound I'm after. One thing that helped me get started on more adventurous right hand techniques was to play in one pickup with everything flat and see where and how to get different tones. This was many years ago and I can say that it gave me many creative ideas and I use all the stuff all the time.
