I found myself at an open mic night which specialises in RnB and gospel styles. It leave me thinking that I should be listening to a lot more of that kind of playing to learn those licks so that I can improvise better. Things like "Praise you"(Mary Mary), "hero" (Carey).
If there was on player who encapsulated the style, who should I listen to? |

If there was on player who encapsulated the style, who should I listen to? | The forefather of that style is Andrew Gouché. If you click on my myspace page below, he is in my top 8. He played on just about all of the GMWA albums, LA Mass Choir, and many others. He is currently touring with Chaka Khan as her music director.
Other players to check out are Fred Hammond, Maurice Fitzgerald, Charles "Volley" Craig, Terrance Palmer, Randy Jackson (Mariah Carey's bass player), and Ricky Minor. |

I also like "Darrell Freeman" who plays on Donnie McClurkin's Latest CD.
Israel's CD's are good too so +1.

That's loads to track down. I was hopeing for an easy answer like a "best of" album, but then the hard road is often the most worthwhile. |

It's a double disc, the first is a studio album with Fred laying down the bass, and the second is a live concert cd, with Terrance Palmer holding it down.
Its one of my favorite albums, and definitely has plenty of great bass playing to get you started! |
