So I'm on a Metallica kick this week (Obviously).

A big part of his "sound" is that he plays hard and hits the fretboard, right? Much like the technique described in the "Demystifying Metal styles" sticky?

I can't say much for his Metallica playing, since I'm more infatuated with his super-smooth funk stylings in Infectious Grooves (side project of Suicidal Tendencies).
I think those bands show of his skills much more than Metallica, but that's just my opinion.

Oh, I'm with you, but I'll wait to judge his recorded output with Metallica.

Infectious Grooves was great.

I don't know much about him. I don't really listen to Metallica much, or Suicidal Tendencies at all, but this is awesome -

My band was covering this song, and I came across this over a year ago. I never tried his intro, but it rocks.

Haven't done much looking into it, but I absolutely love his sound in that clip.

That's the sound I'm talking about....obviously a few effects involved, but I love the attack. I think there was thread about this clip a while back that I need to dig up.

Part of his style involves walking around on stage like a crab-monkey with his bass at his knees, and making the most ridiculous bass faces this side of Jason Newstead.

Just kidding, he's definitely one of the better bassists in heavy metal today. It's always an asset in a band to have someone who is capable of more than just straight 8th rock lines. Not that there is anything wrong with straight 8th rock for those who are picky.

That is a really good version of For Whom The Bell Tolls. The intro is much better than Jason's "forgetting-to-turn-the-wah-off" thing.

It's difficult to make that intro sound band IMO. But that tone.. man, gives me shivers. Just such a near perfect rock bass sound. But, as far and I'm concerned, Jason had the best bass tone in rock going around. That sadowsky tone blows me away every time!

Rob is a huge guy, i mean, he can snap a bass in half.
he has really strong attack, gives him a really thick aggressive tone.
listen to their new song that was played live, cyanide. his tone their is awesome.

someone just tell me how to play this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b31kq...eature=related

rob definitely has skill!

edit: looking back at the other video,... it looks like he is picking hard but for the most part that tone is from effects,... his 'cleaner' tones for what its worth just remind me more of flea in a way that he can go from playing normal soft type attack to a really dug in attack... im guessing he wrecks strings pretty quickly!
