Aim at someone with your bass like it was a gun, then the rest comes naturally.

Two notes plucked on the downstroke, one note flicked with one(or both) on the upstroke makes the "two finger gallop" trivial.

better yet, ain your "GUN BASS", to get closer to your theme traver...lol

ACTUALLY, I played in a Maiden tribute for a few years, and yes, in the beginning it was hard, but a month or so into it, it became easy, and playing hour or so sets were as normal as picking, or regular fingerplaying. Because of all that, I found it made all my other fingerpicking styles much easier, and more accurate, since I play a lot of fast music. I have plenty of IM videos to show my "Harris" technique.

I am always asked if I prefer a pick, and I always tell people the same thing....

YES I DO, My hand has 4 built in picks, why would I use only one when I have 4 at my disposal? ( fingernails )

ECONOMY OF MOTION, is the key...the less you have to move your hands/wrists/fingers, the longer you can play and still enjoy it with no pain LET THE AMP DO THE WORK, or you will always suffer if your beating the bass to death.

p.s. "if" you have your strings so high off the fretboard you can slide a pencil underneath them ---well that's problem #1, long before your technique comes into play ---

just practice the gallops really slow. when i first started, it was hard and at some points i thought my wrist was going to explode off my arm. lol. i would get to the chorus, and then my fingers would beg for mercy and eventually i would painfully spasm into silence. just practice gallops slowly, and if you can do it with three fingers its better because you use up less energy.

Eclectic -- good call!!

And don't worry about the morons who say " you suck cause, uh you know Steve Harris played his gallops with 2 fingers only"

I/WE/YOU are not him, and if you can do the same with 3 fingers and play all night ---DO IT!!! ( I always did/do ) -- later on you WILL be able to 2 finger the gallop if you choose to do so, but why kill yourself at first when it is not necessary?

ECONOMY of motion is the KEY for speed/accuracy.
