I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or not. But it seemed like a technique problem more than anything.
I haven't listened to this song in years, and now I have to learn it for a new band I'm in. I'm having trouble with that fast fill in the middle. Is there is an easier way to play it? Or an easier place on the fingerboard to play it? I'm trying to start it out on the high E (9th fret of the G string.) I was working on it last night and today I woke up with my fingers hurting. Any help would be appreciated.

I find that it helps a lot when I'm learning complicated/fast parts of songs. Once you have it nailed perfectly at the slower tempo, increase the tempo by 10 bpm until you can play it perfectly at full speed. |

I play it by going ring, middle, index, ring, middle, index, pinky. for the first 7 notes. That's the best way i can explain it, it also depends on what tab you're looking at for the song, that would make things alot easier to understand on my end. |

Starting where you discribed is where you want to be.
Like the above post...Learn it.... try it slow.... Build it up to speed. With the 30 plus years of experience you have, you should nail it in no time!
Rush on! |

And yeah, I get what you're saying. But there's an extended version of that that they play once or twice that goes all the way down to D, that's the one I'm having trouble with.

Rush on! | I appreciate the vote of confidence, but 30 years ago I could have probably done it easier. My old decrepit hands are having trouble.

It's the second half of that run that I'm having trouble with.

What I'm talking about is the 1:08 point. They do the first part twice, (7 notes) then the whole thing through. It's the last part of that run that I can't get.

Seriously though, I've been playing that run off and on for 27 years since I was 16. You can find more Rush tabs on 911tab or cygnus tab project. Just google away.

I don't usually look at Tabs because half the time they have you going all the way up the neck to play something when you only need to move up a fret and over a string.
Thanks! And thanks Timo and Gin too.

Then when it goes A G E G E D B A I only use my ring and index fingers on the fifth and seventh frets.
This post will probably not help you play it at all.

This post will probably not help you play it at all. | Actually it makes perfect sense. I've tried several ways, with the G on the D string, 5th fret, A string, 10th fret and open. I think it's a bit easier to play the G on the D string for the second part of the run as it puts you hand in the proper position for the rest of the notes.
