In a rut...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys!

I just have a question about slap/popping... this is not asking about how to slap.

I can slap/pop pretty well, but there's a problem. I'm stuck in a rut when coming up with slap lines.
I can play all over the minor pentatonic, but since thats all I know, I feel like I can't expand and come up with new licks, etc.

What are some popular slap scales, chord progressions, etc..
to get me out of this "pentatonic minor rut"?

You could try moving to India, and study to become a famous sitarist.

Try and slap everthing you know how to play .I dont slap near as much as I use to bu tI use to pride myself on hyper fat false triplets where ypou are ghost noting most of the notes .I started working on different paradiddles by taking the string off my bass and trying to find different ways to percuss at the joint of the neck and body help me break out of the robotic feel of disco bass line stuff whrere you are droning to the bass drum and doing walups witht the octaves .watch the larry grahm and victor wooten videos as well as bill dickens and try out there techniques .Try and take a melodic approach to slap I know it sounds of blasphemy but I think thats the problem with modern slapp players is they try and sound like louis johson or flea and thats all. or they use it as a gimmick trick (which it kind of is ).But I think it can add alot to rythmic dimesion mush like latin influeced music .
I try and couter point my lines by flowing through the scale or mode while keeping a dynamic rythmic back beat slapping .Hope this helps a little

ghost noting is all in the relation ship your fretting hand has in hammering on and palm muting it creates the triplet like role that your looking for just parcticve getting that role sound for hours ...worked for me

actually, melodic slapping is what I mainly do.
My main influence is Marcus Miller, so thats why. Im not really into all the showing-off ghost noting, but it would be nice to learn as a tool someday for soloing.
I just am stuck with the same licks under the minor pentatonic scale, so I was hoping there were some more excercises or scales that could expand my arsenal haha.

most people usually recommend the "slap it" instructional series.

yeah, but like I said, I'm not asking how to play slap.
Just ways to expand my arsenal of licks and stuff. I just keep playing the same thing over and over, just in different ways.

There are tons of things to work on. Double pop/slap, fretboard slaps, ghost notes, muting, hammer ons, slides, play the line backwards. explore the possibilities
