Same fret different string

Sign in to disble this ad
This may seem like a stupid question, I don't know. But, when playing a song (like Plug in Baby - Muse) that uses the same fret but on different string in quite quick succession, how would I go about pulling that off with my hand? At the moment I'm putting my middle finger on the D and index on the E and moving my Index down to A when it's time to play on that, but my hand is in a really awkward + uncomfortable position, so, what else could I do to play this? I tried to use just one finger and moving it up and down but I cant pull it off properly.

Maybe you could try using your thumb on the E string, your pointer finger on the A string, and your middle on the D. Or you could try to learn to play slap bass, or-ugh-play with a pick. Hope that helps.

Look at the videos of that song on you tube. You may be able to see how the bass player is doing it. Seems like a very simple and basic bass line. Keep at it. You'll get it.

I've played songs that require this with one finger across both strings so you're really not playing with the tip of the finger anymore.

Exactly....bar both strings with your index finger.

In this particular instance (E, A, D) you also have access to open strings. I don't know the song or pattern but possibly use an open E or A as well as a combination of fretted E or A along with D. I sometimes do that, or bridge (bar?) strings with one finger.

A bit off-topic but food for thought - For me that type of pattern tends to be one of the hardest things to do on a fretless. I feel your pain....

EDIT: I'm also assuming you mean fretting hand, not plucking hand.

++1 to what Kevin wrote. Clayton what fret are you referring to in this case?

I flatten out/bar for stuff like that. As has been mentioned, open string is avl to you in this particular instance as well.

I personally would keep it barred, or use three fingers, like you'd make an A maj on guitar. Someone suggested that to me for a bass line for Night Moves, which is G F C F G:

G||----------------|-----------||
D||o------3-3------|-3-3------o||
A||o----------3-3--|----------o||
E||---3-3----------|-----3-3---||
(just a sample, not the complete tab)

Same here. With a little bit of extra pressure on the string being played at that particular moment.

Yep, it's hard, but not impossible.

The way I learned it was called finger rolling. Basically say you're playing the note on the E string and you need to play the next note on the A string you can "roll" you finger across the fretboard on to the A or the D and G if you have mutant spider fingers like I do. Or you could barr it, your call.

Pressure roll (think barre-chords) would be the way to go. Perhaps use the middle finger for the D string notes.

i would put my index on the e, pinky on the d, and ring on the a, then shift pressure to stop sustain. like the a chord on a guitar.
