Question Shark Picks

Saw these recently in a store. They look interesting. Anybody here have any experience with them? If so, some thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't mean to be a downer, but apparently these have existed for a while.

These have been around in South Africa for a while - but under a different name - the brand here is "Sharkfins" - I can't recall if they're a subsidary of another pick manufacturer or if they're stand alone.

I don't use a pick for bass - so I can comment for that, but they're great for rhythm/acoustic guitar. They don't have any sort of texture to them, so I don't like using them for lead - when I hold the pick between index and thumb, but for rhythm, the little concave cut-away is comfortable, to place inbetween the first two pads of your index finger - as opposed to having the convex part of a normal pick not really fitting into the groove of the index finger.

I think I've tried the 0.5mm and the 1mm - there are even thinner ones, which a mate of mine uses, but I prefer thicker picks, so I found the 1mm quite nice.

Hope this helps - I think picks are a personal thing and really are cheap enough to just try out and see if you can use them.

Well, just because they are around doesn't mean they are not a gimmick, I mean Sham-wow has been around for a while, too. My .02 is that I never found anything wrong enough with regular picks that would necessitate me inventing something new...

Oh, then I misread the intention of the post and I apologize. I'm just curious about these because I've been experimenting with different shapes and materials lately and this seems like it might be interesting.

They basically are a gimmick. They're made to try and emulate the use of different kinds of picks, but all in one. I used them once. Waste of money. They are a pointless novelty with no real use.

Have you ever tried a Sham-WOW? You, my friend, are missing out on one of the best things ever.

Dunlop also makes a variant.

But, what exactly is so special soundwise about these? Just that rough sound? I played with something similar (a piece of solid plastic with jagged edges) and didn't find any real use for it.

I have a pile of them in different gauges. The three different sides do produce distinct tones, but it's pretty subtle. If I want an "effect" type pick, I usually grab either a Jellyfish, Wedgie or F-1 Doubler.

In the UK they used to be called "The Poor Man's 12 String" - try one on a guitar to see why.

I was going through a box of my old stuff that my mom had......found one from like '79 or 80'.

I always liked them for guitar because of the feel.....and the rippled edge is good for some things - adds a nice 12 string like jangle.
