Over the years I've started to notice everyone's right hand is positioned in their own unique way, which in turn accounts to how everyone sounds different.

So I think it would be cool to have people post a picture of how they naturally place their hand on their basses.

I know we all change our hand position for different tones, but I'd like to see where your hand naturally goes to and how when you pickup a bass.

Here's mine.

I tend to strike with the corner tips of my index finger and more of the pad with my middle,so strangely my first strike on the string is slightly brighter than the second strike with my middle finger, but it helps accentuate the beat, and add more pulse to my playing. I also go back and forth with floating thumb and anchoring.

I typically anchor my thumb on the pup. occasionally I'll use a string - but pretty straight, maybe w/ the elbow out. I try to be conscious about not leaning my arm on the bass. I'm interested in right hand technique - i'm a trained guitar player so I'm covered w/ habit (some good and some bad) on my left hand but am constantly looking for exercises and at pics of others for the right

this is where my hand usually falls

I'm the same way. I do my best to keep from doing the tipical hooked wrist over the body. My hands are going to my career (automotive repair) and I do a lot of drawing and painting. On top of it all arthritis in the hands and wrists runs in my family so I'm doomed.

i feel kinda "special needs" now i dont anchor to anything my thumb just sort of hangs there unless i'm using it as a mute on basslines with lots of open string stuff
and all my plucking movement seems to come from the knuckles on the top of my hand rather than the knuckles on my fingers it also never looks like it has any movement on photo's so even on live pics where i'm rocking a tricky bassline it just looks like my right hand is muting the strings... it looks weird on videos too

I am always looking for technique improvement. I tend to tap the strings rather than pluck, but I have always got good results. any suggestions?

I have a weird 'rest' position that mutes all the strings...I didn't even realise I did it until I came to take a photo of it! It leaves my index finger free for plucking the first note of the song.

Then there's the actual playing position, my ring and pinky just sort of 'float' and (bad habits galore) I sort of use floating thumb about half the time, depending on the song/line.

What kind of bass is that?

A Maverick. It was a small English company that went bust about three or four years ago, I got it secondhand off a guy who endorsed them.

It's a nice bass, I love the preamp, the neck needs some work though...I must remember to do that next time I restring!
