I've heard tons of kids wankin' away at the GC and other places. Are they impressive. Sure, but they don't inspire. Here's my suggestion... and I would find this very impressive.

16 bar blues, bass alone, no drums, no musicians, no track.

1.) Lay down the first two measures with a tasteful walking line.

2.) Stand silent for 14 measures.

3.) Nail the downbeat of the second phrase.

If you want to show off, just go to Guitar Center and get lessons from one of the other show offs there. Kids and adults, that place is full of them.

Sorry someone had to say it.

Rather than copy one of the greats, try coming up with something original AND impressive. While you're showing off, might as well also off your compositional skills. People often forget that Jaco was also a great composer.

Fun fact, French humorist Alphonse Allais wrote a silent composition a full 50 years before John Cage's 4'33" and entitled it "Funeral March for a Deaf Man".

I think it would be a great start just to get used to improvising tastefully over a standard I-IV-V progression. Tasteful, groovy blues lines are beautiful.

And if you really want something to "show off" with, try some James Brown - simple and stylish. Or YYZ by Rush, if you must be fancy. You have to learn the whole thing and play it in time, though.
