Angry Skipping from an open string with a pick

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I just switched to pick playing from fingerstyle recently (I find I get a better and more even attack) and I have come a cropper.

When playing something fast that involves skipping from an open string how is one to mute the open string? I'll give you an example of what I'm playing:

--------------------------------------------
----------6--7--------9---------------------
-7---------------------------8--------------
----0--0--------0--0-----0------0--0--0--0-

this is supposed to be played at about 214bpm all 8th notes, I can barely manage at 107 without it being some kind of messy nightmare. I know I could palm mute it but I find that with this riff particularly the notes lose too much tone when I try that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Simon

you could try letting the e ring through the whole part, kinda like a drone?

ie

--------------------------------------------
----------6--7--------9---------------------
-7---------------------------8--------------
----0--0--------0--0-----0------0--0--0--0-
^ ^ ^
keep the e sounding here here and here

Anchor your hand at the bridge and use a slight rolling motion as you skip strings to mute the open E. Use your meat of your palm as a on off mute.

Same as most metal guitar players.

With your left hand you can also use your first finger to mute the while fretting the upper notes with your other 3 fingers

my band plays a lot of songs with this style. i normaly replace the open note with the 7th fret on the higher string(normaly the same note as the open note) not only is it easyer but i find it adds somthing more to your sound

Consider using your left thumb.

Practice, and become proficient with your RH palm and LH fingers easing off the string when not playing the note.
