Slap and Chrome Pickup Cover

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently installed a chrome pickup cover on my Lakland DJ and it made the bass look even cooler. However, the cover gets in the way when I slap. My right palm keeps hitting it.

I know Marcus has no problem with the cover but I'm no Marcus.

Does anyone find the cover cumbersome when slapping? I have no problem with it when fingerpicking, though.

So move over the fingerboard more? ( I havent played with a cover since 1970, so...)

I had a Marcus Miller Jazz bass and I had no problem slapping. But if you notice the way Marcus holds his hand when he slaps, it looks like he did compensate, in some way, his technique. It does force you to slap at the base of the neck more where some folks play a little bit lower.

Like Marcus, Will Lee keeps the neck PUP cover on his basses too. They both use the cover as a pivot point for their right hand when they slap, and it gets you the bounce off the last fret that's important for the traditional slap style.

Me, covers just get in my way when I play, so I've always yanked them off.

Just got my MM V string a few years back, was tough to adjust at first. Just give it some time. A light touch and using the PUP cover as an anchor may actually end up a benefit for accuracy.
