1. Make right thumb parallel to string and over it, right at the end of the fretboard.

2. Hit the string down with your thumb and pull your thumb back so the string can vibrate.

I'm lazy too, so that's about as detailed as its gunna get from me.

And make sure you pull it back fast. I don't slap anymore, but I had that problem when I started. My wrist was kinda slow about getting my thumb off the string.

pretty much what /\ he said up there is how to do it after you get that down try a puck. here are the steps to plucking

1.arch your finger under the sting you are going to pluck
2.dont hook the end of your finger keep that semi flat
3 with a hard attack hit the string with an upward and outward motion of the hand, it is okay if your finger hooks after you pluck the string that is natural for that to happen

The first thing you should know about slap is that it takes forever to perfect.

Also remember that if your tone isn't set for slap even if you're doing it right you might not know it. A good rule of thumb is to turn your bass and highs up and flat your mids. That way you get good punch when you slap, and get crispy snaps when you pluck. Hope this helps. -joe

Dead strings don't work for slap.

The slap will go first. Then the pops will start to fade.

While unplugged just whack the e string with your thumb over the last fret. If it makes a thud then they are dead. It should go "Bow" and ring a bit. (as in bow-chicka-bow-bow)

It's important to note that you should be hitting the string with the bone on the side of your thumb... The one that sticks out at the first knuckle.

Wow, I just picked up slapping a couple days ago and moving my hand closer to the fretboard made it about 10 times easier. Just when I thought I knew everything...

Try to bounce that thumb right off the fretboard (around 18-20 frets on jazz bass). Slappin over the pickups will sound crappy. Also, take time to tweak your sound so that it cuts through the drums and guitar. Cut those mids.
