Slap, pop, and... metal?

How would this combo work?
I was thinking I would play an average heavy riff during the chorus and then during instumental/important parts switch over to slapping and popping for that added highlight.

How well do you think this would work?

(Dont worry, Im not going to turn into one of those stupid "look at me slap & pop and 100 mph!" people on youtube and such)

It could work very well!

Have you heard of Ryan Martinie? Bassplayer for Mudvayne? He slaps in a metalband.

Jokes!

He's the first guy I thought of when I read this thread! He's awesome.

And "Dig is a killer tune. Very tasteful slap/pop.

Dang, I was gonna check out that Mudvayne song, but there was way to much swearing for my tastes.

Sikth on the other hand is pretty good.

Im happy to hear my idea would actually work, and work well at that. Usually my ideas totally suck.

You only have to listen to the intro to get a feel for the slap in that song.

Oh, okay, I will do that then. Thanks man.

EDIT: I understand now, and I also definately want to include that slap and pop method into my bands sound.

There's a lot of slap and pop in extreme metal bands.

Shavo Odadjian does (VERY LITTLE, mind you) slap every now and then, live...
Um, If youve heard "Jerry was a Race-Car Driver", during the bridge where Les is all "Go!", thats a good example...and very heavy sounding.

I've heard Kevin Chown do some slapping with Magnitude 9, and also Dave Larue with Vinnie Moore. Not really heavy metal though

if you can find a band that is willing to work within those limits that would be a killer avenue to explore. i play in a death metal band the only way i can slap without getting funny looks is if i do it up near the bridge. granted its a different sound, but i anchor to the bridge pickup anyways and its about the same volume as my fingerstyle. being able to do fast fingerstyle runs and some low key funky octaves makes up for the sound varience from the traditional slap technique.

Well, considering I'm starting the band, and everyone acknowleges that it is MY band, I'm pretty sure I can do whatever the heck I want in it.

Also, does anyone have tips for the thumb slap? I can do the popping fine and fast as if I were doing fingerstyle, but I cant seem to get the right slap thing happening.

Do I smell "opinion"?

I plan to use it very rarely, and only as a short highlight.
