Slap and Pop problem!

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently started to practice slapping and popping technique.
But the problem i encounter is i can slap the 3rd and 4th string no problem but 2nd and 1st string i can't slap it and i can't pop those 2 string either. I not sure is it the string height that cause the problem?

I've not adjust the string height since i bought my bass, i just find it hard to pop the string, it pop when i pull the string up high and let go =.=

I doubt it's string height. It takes awhile to develop a smooth slap technique. Take it SLOWLY until you get the muscle memory to play cleanly and confidently. You shouldn't have to pull your strings up high. A little pluck should do it. And as for your thumb - think of a piano, and the way the hammer strikes the string and bounces off when you press a key.

Here's some Louis Johnson. Slap bass the way it was meant to be:

I have been learning this technique as well. It helps with lower action, but At first I was trying to slap too hard. After a few lessons and alot of practice i got it where I could do it.
