Slap Song

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a question.
I know it is a little bit ambigious and subjective question
but let me ask it:
I am willing to put 3 or 4 bass songs (chords played on bass,
tapping techniques and singins) on my album. Just my bass and my voice. No other instrument.
May add some keyboard pad sounds if necessary.
But I also want to add my slap riffs into the songs.
But when I slap I am afraid that the songs may need a drum section. Or is it possible to just slap (occasionally adding some fxs like delays) after the chords and go back to the chordal section without any need for drum part?
(hope and pray that the answer will be : you can easily make it work without any drumming behind :-D and with some advices on how.)

Any actual released or non-released solo bass song exemples (with slap-pop technique in it) would be greatly appreciated.

Who said, that you canīt play chordal grooves. I do this all the time.

Anyway...Itīs also up to your composition and arrangements.

why does it have to have already been made in order to be a good idea ? why don't you try ? your ideas and your ears are your (worst and) best friends.

Have a listen to some of the following ( most if not all have tracks on Myspace)...

Trip Wamsley
Michael Manring
Jeff Schmidt
Seth Horan
Nathan Hughes

All have elements of the method you mention

Cheers,
Alun

U can't hold no groove by victor wooten

He slaps and does chords during the entire song and doesn't have drums. Heck, he doesn't have nothing else besides the bass

Try adding a slap bass track that emulates the drums. Add a little compression and EQing to let it sit in the mix comfortably. I have layered bass tracks with rather impressive results. Experimenting is always fun and a great learning experience.

I got a looper but I feel like I shouldnt use it.
I would like to hear your thoughts...
My reasons are :
1) It seems quite risky for control on stage. As I sing as well it requires a lot of concentration.
2) It makes me lazy as I start to just add very minimalistic riffs together and feel like I play something rich.:-D
3) It might sound bad on recordings...
4) I hate technology and the complication it brings....

Or I dont have the guts enough to use it yet...maybe...=(

Thats why I want to make my album as "one woman playing in the room" as possible=) (Yes I am a woman btw)

So I feel like I shouldnt add many channels of bass because I want to be able to play it live.....
Imagine a singer playing bass chords and some slaps tappings in between. No other bass line, no drums, no other track I mean...One person..No looper...Voice and one bass....

Does it sound too "primitive" for an album ? :P
I dont have great skills like Wooten but I feel like I can write some heart-felt bass songs.....Hopefeully..-D

Hi, have a listen to what this guy does with a looper, I think it's great. Technology is just a tool, it's what you do with that counts

Kate Bush cover is very very touching but still I dont trust

I am sooo impressed by Seth Horan !!!
This is exactly what I wanna do !!!
Cool !! Where can I find his Cds? or download songs?
Les July's voice is more touching though..
