Are slappers wankers?

Sign in to disble this ad
possibly going to ruffle some feathers here, and not sure if this has been discussed but I can remember when I first started playing, in the late 70's...going to music stores when there were other bass players...nobody was slapping. I've played in metal bands, country bands, fusion bands, blues bands, classic rock bands and would possibly spend 1 minute or less max ever slapping on a given night.

It seems like every person I watch on youtube feels the need to slap their bass well past the point of it being a "language accessory"...almost as if it's the entire language. Did Mark King start this? I've never been to a concert where there was much slapping and I've seen some of the greats. Where did all this slapping come from and is it going to end eventually?

when I get a new bass I'm always curious to hear what it sounds like slapped, but I think in reality very little of my time is going to be spent slapping on it, so why do I give a rats what it sounds like slapped? Do we buy basses that are "slap machines"...if so...why? Does anybody on here play gigs that are primarily slap? Maybe I just need to get out and about more..but I want to know what the story is here, I feel like it's the texting of the phone world...everybody wants to know if they can text...personally I suck at texting and I think it's dumb...but some people spend a LOT of time texting. Poor bastids.

Well, if a slapper is wanking than he is a wanker. But if a slapper is not wanking, than that means he is either not a wanker, or he is not currently wanking.

That would be my answer.

I think any style has its 'wankers'.

Tis the season to diss slapping? Seems like the trend of the week. Drop it, it's getting stale.

SO, if they're a wanker, does that make them a tosser too? I always thought the word wanker was synonymous with douchebag (for the US folks)....Tell me though, if slapping to bass is what texting is to cell phones (mobiles, If you will), what is tapping?

If the "slapper" is slapping crap, then he's a "crap slapper". If, however, he's really groovin, then he's a "groove slapper"?? Sounds kinky..

Heh. Indeed! I knew there was a cosmic purpose to my taking symbolic logic as an undergrad...

IMO, any and every style is hard to do well, and easy to do badly.

Think of the crappy Jamerson imitations you've heard...

It's not wanking if it fits the song.

I meant that phones were initially not used for texting, then texting became available as an alternative mode of communication, and some circles now use texting as their primary mode of communication....although as they walk around with their heads down or smashing their car into stuff...other folks think they're wankers.

I'm not trying to diss slap...and not saying it's wrong, I'm simply asking questions here. Maybe it seems like I'm trolling and in a way I'm trolling for explanations, maybe I'm getting too old and can't relate to the younger folks. I think slapping can sound good in some cases, but I just don't get it as a primary style, that's all I'm saying. And to the one guy, I think tapping falls into this category as well, Stu Hamm and Sheehan both had mastered standard playing style before they went medieval on the extracurricular..

For a place that has such a common ground we all share there sure is a lot of angst about what others do. I'm often surprised at how CLOSED minded a lot of the bassists on this site are.

I usually attribute it to youth but that makes me feel like an old man.

+1

Am I the first one to publicly declare that this thread is in the wrong forum? It belongs in Technique.

Slap is the musical equivalent of ketchup!
To many people overuse it and ruin perfectly good stuff with it.
Sometimes though it works brilliantly!
