slapping affecting finger style dexterity

Sign in to disble this ad
I've practiced finger style technique almost exclusively most of my playing career but recently I've been trying to incorporate more slapping into my bass regiment. The problem is every time I move on to a finger exercise after I'm done slapping and popping my finger dexterity feels jerky (I mainly use my index for the pop). Is this something that will pass away with more practice? I would appreciate your thoughts and experiences.

You might possibley be using a lot of your index finger's muscles to do the poppin... over time less of that will be in your fingers and more in the wrist. Maybe this is just from my experience.

1...relax your popping technique...

2... make up some practice drills where you're alternating between slap-style and finger-style...like 2 bars of slap, 2 bars FS, 2 bars slap, 2 bars FS...

it's a valuable skill to be able to move easily between the two anyway...I play a lot of songs in church where I'll throw in som slap/pop accents, and then go right back to the fingerstyle groove...and it's not all that easy to make it smooth...

Also try to alternate between the index and the middle finger when popping, as if you where playing finger style.

Stretch out your fingers and hands/wrist etc prior, give it a good 2-4 minutes worth.

Then lighten up with the fingers/slap, turn the volume up, that's what that knob is for, not to turn down so you have pluck the bejessus out of the strings

Old habits are hard and when you try something new, it brings you back to the newbie level.

I'm messing with double thumbing and feel like a beginner(and truth be told, am one!)

Regards,
Tom
