Slapping on a P

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a fretless P bass, my main bass, and I slap on it all the time. Do people normally slap on a P? Some people have told P's are no good to slap on. I don't see a problem with it, but I just want to hear other peoples' opinions on it.

Other people's opinions on what you should or shouldn't do on a certain bass amount to a hill of beans. If you like slapping on your fretless P, then you should go on doing it. Not very many people do that, and it can become your signature sound.

Slap on a P (especially a fretless one!) won't give you the "classic" slap tone, but who cares?

If it sounds good, then it is good, right? At least in the bass world. Heck, distortion was first found with broken speakers. And it's been everywhere since there!

I remember seeing some instructional book on slap where the guy played a P. I believe the P bass was a big part of that early funk sound, and slapping can be a big part of funk so by simple deduction...

I think that a P is a great bass to slap on. When I wanted a good slap sound on my P, I would string it up with some DR High Beams.

I have found "P" to not sound best for the slap tone I am after personally, I preffer Jazz. But like others say it may be your sound. So nothing wrong with doing whatever you are doing as long as you like it.

Interesting mix of responses...
I certainly don't plan on changing technique soon just because some people don't like the sound of a P being slapped(hehe). I really dig the sound of it.

Well, you were also lied to all your childhood about santa Claus werent you? ... wait... damn you did know it was a fib right?

now seriously... even more notorious than a P-bass, lots of people say that you cant slap on a Rickenbacker...

Bull...Dust.

Did it last jam session (first that I took the ric with me) and guess what? it RIPS at slap. real damn growly and full of attitude. all you need is a good setup and some fresh strings for it to sound good.

Even with my lame slap technique, I could see the band were enjoying it... and I used to play a Stingray before, so, they know a good slap tone when they hear it. hehe.

just be careful as yours is fretless, slapping can damage your fretboard...

I agree Bassist4Life, I was just alerting, cause I used to have a fretless that I used to slap on, until I started noticing rosewood dust all over my hands and pickups/top after a heavy session (Not a lot of dust but enough to let me know that I was digging into the fretboard.)

You shouldn't even have to ask this question.

Slapped P = Classic Funk

People who say P's are no good to slap on are just ignorant to the roots of funk.

You beat me to it.

Louis Johnson's tone on Stomp is a great example of a slapped P bass. It's old school funk and you have to love it.

Slapping= technique
P bass= tool

A talented craftsman will pick the appropriate tool and technique to suit the requirement before him.

Its not that people say slapping a P specifically is bad its just that American P(in my opinion) does have a great slap tone, but its one of the best basses to slap. A swap of pickups and adjust the action and a P-bass can be a great slap bass.
