I have a fretless P bass, my main bass, and I slap on it all the time. Do people normally slap on a P? Some people have told P's are no good to slap on. I don't see a problem with it, but I just want to hear other peoples' opinions on it. |

If you like slapping on your fretless P, then you should go on doing it. Not very many people do that, and it can become your signature sound.
Slap on a P (especially a fretless one!) won't give you the "classic" slap tone, but who cares? |

When I wanted a good slap sound on my P, I would string it up with some DR High Beams.

I certainly don't plan on changing technique soon just because some people don't like the sound of a P being slapped(hehe). I really dig the sound of it. |

now seriously... even more notorious than a P-bass, lots of people say that you cant slap on a Rickenbacker...
Bull...Dust.
Did it last jam session (first that I took the ric with me) and guess what? it RIPS at slap. real damn growly and full of attitude. all you need is a good setup and some fresh strings for it to sound good.
Even with my lame slap technique, I could see the band were enjoying it... and I used to play a Stingray before, so, they know a good slap tone when they hear it. hehe.
just be careful as yours is fretless, slapping can damage your fretboard...

Slapped P = Classic Funk
People who say P's are no good to slap on are just ignorant to the roots of funk. |

Louis Johnson's tone on Stomp is a great example of a slapped P bass. It's old school funk and you have to love it.
Slapping= technique
P bass= tool
A talented craftsman will pick the appropriate tool and technique to suit the requirement before him.

A swap of pickups and adjust the action and a P-bass can be a great slap bass. |
