Slapping technique

the way i was taught to slap was you move your hand down and make somewhat of fist with your thumb sticking out as far as i know this is the most efficient way to slap.

however, ive noticed that everytime flea plays a slap lick he has an open hand and sits it on the strings as if he was playing fingerstyle and his attack comes from above the strings rather than below.

i was just wondering if anyone knows what im talking about and how you can accurately slap and even pluck at all if you have your hand like that.

It's what is most comfortable to you. Personally I use the partial fist when slapping because it allows the most control for me, and I use my thumb to mute the string and index finger to pluck.

there are tonal and playing benefits to prope technique. i find that keeping your thumb parellel to the strings makes control and dexterity easier and also allows for quicker variation of technique...switrchign between slapping, pluching, muting, fingerstyle, strumming, double thumbing..etc...
