Sliding up and down on the fretboard

hey whats up guys,

This question is kinda hard to explain. Im having trouble sliding up and down on the neck fast. Also the frets are eating my hand up when i do it. If i slide up the skin between my pointer and middle figure gets eatten up on the frets. Do some people use tape around their fingers? any advice for the right way to slide up the fret board?

Why would you want to do this anyway...

I can see a slide as a very occasional "effect" , but never something I would be doing all the time...?

If you're just talking about changing "positions" on the fretboard - then you can take your fingers off the fretboard when moving!!

It may be that your bass has badly-finished frets which have been left with burs and sharp edges - not a good thing!

Otherwise - without seeing, we can't give definite advice - you need to have a lesson with a good bass player/teacher who can actually see what is going wrong..?

if your fret-ends are hurting you because there are sharp bits sticking out, either smooth them yourself carefully (with a fine file or abrasive paper) or take your bass to a luthier and get them to do it

if the strings themselves are hurting your hands, try a different brand of string... stainless steel strings like Rotosounds can be hard on your hands, so maybe try nickels instead?

once you have those two things sorted, practice will build up any callusses you need.. don't bother with tape, just get sore for a while and it'll pass

I don't understand the 'skin between my pointer and middle finger' reference... unless you have webbed hands like a duck there shouldn't be any skin between your fingers! if you're referring to skin on your palm between those fingers, your technique is wrong... your palm shouldn't be touching strings, frets or neck

or you could do what many seem to do here, buy a 7 string, and only play laterally in one position!
