So, how do you move/have you hand while playing fingerstyle?

I've seen alot of bassist that almost pick with their whole hands, is this good? Or well i cant explain it better, it was rock bassist by the way...
Anyway, when i play my hand just lies in the position it needs to be in and then my fingers does the work, it doesn't look as cool but i think you cant play very fast with the other technique, but it does look like they play way fast, weird..

is it just economy of motion?

I do that sometimes.. move my whole hand as I hit the strings. I do it for economy of motion, so I don't get tired as quickly doing long, fast parts.

my hand is placed most of the time at one position ....thumb on the string above and my fingers do the work i change the position only when i need to use 3 or 4 fingers for fast chord disassemble.
