Perhaps some music samples from the author would be helpful:

I have a cuban bass book where this guy is playing on it and it's hot.
You won't learn new technic but I'm sure you'll learn some damn good rythms bass lines.

Amateur Advice

Afro-Cuban music is a great style to get into. You could check out some Buena Vista Social Club stuff, or I suggest the Afro-Cuban All Stars. Dizzie Gillespie did a bit of stuff with the Afro-Cuban style.

One of the major characteristics of Afro-Cuban (jazz) music is polyrhythm. This is where there exists more than one major rhythmic pattern. What I mean is that when you listen to most contemporary music, the basic idea for the bassist is to synch up with the drums and percussion. In polyrhythm, the percussion will play one line and the bass plays on a different rhythm. This could just be showing you some sweet lines to play in what is an otherwise common meter. I'm just guessing, though. I haven't seen the book. That and I've basicall had no formal training whatsoever. I hope I don't get flamed for a stupid (read incorrect) answer.
