| interesting subject.
I have been working a lot lately on arranging jazz standards to play with just bass and vocals, as I have a singer I really like working with that is interested in this.
Not sure I have a useful answer, but, as I am pretty awful at tapping, I have found chords are my friend. I have to get creative on voicings at times, cause I generally play only 4 strings. Think open voicings, where you are skipping a string and using 3 notes.
There are certain tunes where I will switch between walking and chording. The solo bits are extra fun (read as scary/exposed), as you don't even have any percussion to keep you company and help keep track of where you are.
Also, keep in mind that space is your friend. Just because you know how to fill in 3 parts at once, doesn't mean it will sound as good as a simple chunky chord or walking line -- ESPECIALLY underneath a good vocal part.
I have performed a little bit in this mode with my singer friend (a handful of songs in the middle of acoustic sets where other musicians will take a break). It actually was well received the few times we have done it. Soon we will add in a horn or flute, and then things get really fun, and I'll probably get serious about looking for gigs. Anyway, sorry to take off on a tangent, but I am definitely curious to see where this thread goes. |
