Soloing and Runs

Which Inversions do you find the most useful when soloing or creating runs?

Inversion from the 3rd, 5th or 7th?

All of the above. Are you transcribing solos? A couple good horn solos, like Miles or Chet Baker will really open your ears up to new possibilities!

No. Not transcribing solos.

I have just learning 4 inversions for Major7 and Dom7 chords. Next will be for Minor7 and Minor7b5 chords. A friends of mine is a guitar player who has written a number of songs and I will be writing the basslines for the songs. I was just wondering if you guys had found that certain inversion were more functional than others.

I'm no big soloist (I think most bass solos stink, no matter how fast or high), but the three modes I use over and over and over are lydian, myxolydian and dorian. Can't lose with that Dorian mode - it's *just* strange enough sounding to be cool... Stuff in Phyrgian and Locrian mode stuff gets tired after a while... but that's just me.

Hey Harry!

I find myself using Mixolydian and Aeolian a lot. I was wondering about inversions starting at the 3rd (b3), 5th (b5) and 7 (b7).
