i was watching a great video yesterday about guitar soloing.
he went over the three major chord types and associated scale forms for jazz soloing.
here are my notes from the Major 7th chord:
Scales Over Chords
C Major 7th
1. Major scale over tonic.
2. Add chromatic passing tones upper/lower neighbors
3. Pentatonics:
On the 6th A Minor Pentatonic A C D E G - A
On the 2nd D Minor Pentatonic D F G A C - D
On the 3rd E Minor Pentatonic E G A B C - D
On the 7th B Minor Pentatonic B D E F# - A - B
4. Major 7th Add flat 5 (F#):
C Lydian Mode C D E F# - G A - B
G Major scale G A B C D E F#
5. Major 7th Arpeggio :
On the Tonic C C E G - B
On the 5th G G - B D F#
(Major 7th of G - #4/b5 of C)
6. Minor 7th Flat 5
On the Flat 5th Gb Min 7thb 5
Gb (b5) Ab (#5) Bbb (6th) Cb (Major 7th)
Dbb (Tonic) Db (b9) E - F
Usage: Ascend Gb Min 7 b5 descend G Maj 7
7. Major Triads
On the Tonic: C Major Triad C E G - B
On the 2nd: D Major Triad D F# (b5) A - C
On the 5th: G Major Triad G B D F# (b5)
PLAYING OUTSIDE MAJOR
8. Melodic Minor on the 6th:
A Melodic Minor A B C D E F# - G#
9. Major Triad on the 3rd E:
Adds the sharp 5 (G#) E G# - B
10. Major scale on the 2nd D:
Adds F# (b5) and C# (b9) D E F# - G A B C#
11. Minor Pentatonic on the flat 5th Gb:
Usage: Play with B/E/D Minor Pentatonic (In)
After thinking about this, the altered notes tend to dance around
D and G when in C.
G of course is the dominant of C and a basic modulation device in classical music.
D is the secondary dominant, sometimes used in classical music to delay a modulation/resolution segment.
G and D are also the 2 neighboring keys to C in the circle of fifths.
you always hear about tension resolution when soloing, with the above examples, it is interesting to note the relation back to classical harmony.
just a couple of minor epiphanies i thought i'd share.
